Pleasure without Purpose is not deeply fulfilling.
Purpose without Pleasure neither.
It's the combination of both that makes it WHOLE.
Most of us are conditioned from early on not to live the life of Pleasure & Purpose, but a life of Survival.
I remember I wanted to study psychology and languages as I was passionate about these subjects, and my dad influenced me to "go and study economics, because this will ensure a good income for you". This is how parents out of deep love for their children, may steer them AWAY from themselves, not even realizing it.
Some of the possible consequences of living a life of SURVIVAL are inner emptiness, stress, shame, confusion, loneliness, EVEN THOUGH from outside such a life can look successful work- and family-wise.
When we hold survival as the highest value and serve it, we make our choices accordingly. A life of Survival eventually takes us to places like depression and anxiety, burnout and bore-out. And actually for GOOD. Because for many of us it's by hitting these tough states that we are forced to STOP and start listening to the deeper voice within. For most people, this is the point when awakening starts.
It was me some 15 years ago, when I was employed as a financial analyst for a world-known multinational enterprise. I had a prestigious job, a great salary with a double vacation pay, I could travel the whole world for work and holidays. I also had a boyfriend for 7 years, a successful lawyer working for another multinational, and we lived in a gorgeous penthouse in one of the most expensive parts of Brussels.
"Ideal life! What else do you need?" many would say.
Because our society loves external success, but doesn't spend much time on looking whether the success is actually internally rewarding and sustainable.
It's not until I had a spiritual burn out at the age of 29 that I started asking myself these questions:
IS THIS IT TO LIFE?
WHAT IS LIFE REALLY ABOUT?
It's around that time that I started coming to a bitter realization that I'd better DIE than live another month like I used to live.
It felt meaningless and empty.
One day, I woke up, and simply did not go to the office. Shortly after, I officially quit my job, packed my backpack and left for India in search of myself and meaning of life. I spent many months in ashrams studying Vedanta (ancient scriptures), Sanskrit, Yoga and Meditation. I met many other seekers, who, similar to myself, were completely lost.
This is when it HIT me that I lived my life in total ignorance till that point.
I did not know how my life would look like from then on, but I knew that I was going to uncover my deepest Truth and live it. NO MATTER WHAT!
And so I started following my deeper LONGING and saying NO to everything else.
When I eventually uncovered my purpose, I was so thrilled that I threw myself fully into it and found myself a few years later in an emotional burnout.
It's only when I stepped onto a Tantric path that I learned to cultivate abundance of energy through holistic PLEASURE in my physical and energetic bodies. This cultivation started serving as a foundation and fuel for living my PURPOSE. In a beautifully ALIGNED way.
Today, I put PLEASURE first, because it resources me to do what I've got to do in this lifetime. And pleasure is not limited to sexual pleasure only, it's pleasure across the board, on all levels.
